MILWAUKEE, April 23 (UPI) -- Craig Counsell slapped a bases-loaded single up the middle with two outs in the ninth inning Friday night, giving Milwaukee a 2-1 win over St. Louis.
Returning home the night after playing 15 innings in a loss in Colorado, the Brewers faced the prospect of another extra-inning affair. But they benefited from a questionable call in the ninth.
With a runner at first and one out, Gary Bennett hit a hard grounder to shortstop Edgar Renteria, who got the force at second. While Marlon Anderson's return throw was high, first baseman Albert Pujols appeared to get his foot down before Bennett crossed the bag.
But Bennett was called safe by first base umpire Jeff Nelson and that was all the Brewers needed as Wes Helms singled off Steve Kline (0-1) and Scott Podsednik walked on a 3-2 pitch. Counsell singled on a 2-0 pitch to win it.
