Raptors fire Coach Kevin O'Neill

TORONTO, April 16 (UPI) -- The National Basketball Association's Toronto Raptors fired Coach Kevin O'Neill Friday.

The team also fired four members of O'Neill's staff -- Bob Beyer, Tony Brown, Jim Sann and Ron Oliver. The firings came two weeks after the dismissal of Glen Grunwald as general manager.

The latest moves came a day after O'Neill questioned the commitment to winning of the team's ownership group.

"There needs to be drastic measures taken to move in the direction of focusing this team on winning basketball games," he said at a team meeting Thursday.

The team is owned by Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment, a group that also owns the Toronto Maple Leafs of the National Hockey League.

O'Neill's team finished this season with a 33-49 record.

In announcing the firings, Jack McCloskey, interim general manager, said: "This season fell well short of our expectations, and while the blame for that certainly does not rest on Kevin O'Neill and his staff alone, we felt that the team's lack of success on the court, and the fact that we are committed to providing the general manager with every opportunity to succeed, necessitated this change."
