San Diego had just one run against San Francisco starter Kirk Rueter through three innings but scored three times in the fourth and twice more in the seventh, with Nevin playing a key role in both rallies.

Scott Linebrink (1-0) and Akinori Otsuka worked a perfect inning a piece in relief before Hoffman got the first two batters in the ninth.

But Pedro Feliz singled, Ray Durham doubled and J.T. Snow worked out a walk to load the bases.

Jim Brower (0-1), who failed to retire a batter in the seventh, took the loss. Rueter allowed four runs and eight hits in five innings.
