Detroit manager, pitcher suspended

DETROIT, April 9 (UPI) -- Pitcher Nate Cornejo, the winning pitcher in Detroit's home-opening victory over Minnesota, was suspended five games Friday for a spring training incident.

Major League Baseball also suspended Tigers manager Alan Trammell and fined him an undisclosed amount.

"The commissioner's office has made its decision," Trammell said. "I will serve the suspension tomorrow (Saturday) and we will move on."

Three batters had already been hit with pitches and both teams had been warned before Cornejo plunked Ricky Ledee with a pitch in the sixth inning of a game March 29. Cornejo was promptly tossed from the game and Trammell drew an automatic ejection.
