BEREA, Ohio, April 7 (UPI) -- Carmen Policy will step down as president and CEO of the Cleveland Browns on May 1.

John Collins, the NFL's senior vice president of marketing and sales, will replace Policy.

Policy, who will remain with the team as a consultant through the 2004 season, was hired by late Browns owner Al Lerner when Cleveland was rewarded a franchise following the departure of the original Browns to Baltimore.

"This means that I will have a business card, I will have a relationship with the Browns," Policy said. "That means I will get paid and that means I really won't have to work that hard."

His current contract with the Browns was structured to allow owner Randy Lerner, the son of Al Lerner, to take a more active role.

In recent years, Policy has made no secret of his desire to return to his home in California. In 2003, Policy sold his 10 percent interest in the team back to the Lerner family.
