Avalanche's Kariya out with ankle injury

DENVER, April 5 (UPI) -- Colorado Avalanche star Paul Kariya will be out of the lineup indefinitely with a sprained right ankle, the team announced Monday.

The 29-year-old left wing was hurt when he twisted his leg while falling to the ice in a game against the Nashville Predatgors Sunday. He was removed from the game and escorted to the locker room.

The Avalanche open the first round of the NHL's Western Conference playoffs at home Wednesday night against the Dallas Stars.

Kariya, who was bothered by a wrist injury this season, has 11 goals and 25 assists in 51 games, the lowest totals of his career.
