Vikings' Asher Allen retires at age 24
PORTIMAO, Portugal, April 2 (UPI) -- Ian Woosnam, who just a day earlier feared he was "too old and knackered," stormed into contention Friday at the Algarve Open de Portugal.
Woosnam carded a 6-under-par 66 for a halfway total of 7-under 137 at Penina, two shots behind Spain's Miguel Angel Jimenez.
Jimenez also recorded a 66 to finish at 9-under, one shot ahead of compatriot Ignacio Garrido, Ireland's Damien McGrane and Australia's Terry Price, with Woosnam fifth alongside first-round leader Peter Lawrie.
"I felt I was getting a bit old or unfit for this game," said Woosnam, 46, who won The Masters in 1991. "Perhaps I was out to prove something.
Woosnam is the only member of this week's field who will be playing at Augusta next week.
