Raptors fire GM Grunwald

TORONTO, April 1 (UPI) -- The National Basketball Association's Toronto Raptors Thursday fired General Manager Glen Grunwald.

Jack McCloskey was named to the post for the remainder of the season. McCloskey, who has been working as a consultant with the team, is a former general manager of the Detroit Pistons.

The Raptors (30-44) have lost five straight games and are 3 1/2 behind Boston for the eighth and final playoff spot in the NBA's Eastern Conference.

Raptors President Richard Peddie said Grunwald "was very disappointed in this decision, but he understood it ... it is time for a new approach, a new set of eyes to chart our course for a championship."

Peddie said the decision was made Monday but he waited until Thursday to make the announcement.

"We are fortunate to have someone of Jack's experience to help us through this transition period," Peddie said.
