Coach denies intimidating alleged victim

BOULDER, Colo., March 25 (UPI) -- Colorado Football Coach Gary Barnett adamantly denied Thursday he had intimidated a woman who accused one of his players of rape.

"In absolutely no way did I attempt to intimidate her," Barnett said. "The player had a different version of the story, but we carried out her wishes and sent him a very strong message. We did what she asked and we maintained her privacy."

Barrett spoke out in his defense in the Rocky Mountain News, his latest statement in two months of allegations that sex and alcohol are part of his recruiting pitch.

He was suspended Feb. 18, the day a police report surfaced in which Barnett was said to have told the accuser that he would "back his player 100 percent if she took this forward in the criminal process."

The woman did not seek to press charges in the October 2001 incident, but she did eventually receive a letter of apology from the player.
