SAN JOSE, Calif., March 21 (UPI) -- Rookie defenseman Marc-Andre Bergeron recorded his first career two-goal game Sunday to help Edmonton post its fourth straight win, 5-2 over San Jose.

Edmonton defensemen accounted for all the offense as the Oilers gained a point for the 12th straight game (7

2-3) and moved within one point of idle St. Louis for the final Western Conference postseason berth.

Jason Smith scored the game-winner, making a shorthanded goal at 11:59 of the second period, just 3 1/2 minutes after Sharks defenseman Kyle McLaren forged a 2-2 tie.

Eric Brewer got his sixth goal at 3:19 of the third and set up Bergeron's second of the night less than 7 1/2 minutes later.

Cory Cross had the other goal for the Oilers.

Patrick Marleau also scored for San Jose, which missed a chance to overtake Colorado for second place in the West.
