Montgomerie wins Caltex Masters

, Singapore, March 21 (UPI) -- Former European No. 1 Colin Montgomerie stormed back from a four-shot deficit Sunday and captured the Caltex Masters in Singapore.

Montgomerie ended a 16-month title drought after firing a 7-under-par 65 at Laguna National, racing past American Greg Hanrahan to win by four strokes.

It was the 28th career win for the 40-year-old Scotsman, but his first since the Volvo Masters Andalucia in November 2002.

"This means an awful lot to me, it means confidence. I lost it last year and I have it back now," Montgomerie said. "People thought I was mad coming out here again as it's very warm, but I don't seem to mind the heat. It fully justifies all the travel around the world."

Montgomerie began the tournament with a 71 that included a bogey on the final hole. But that was his last blemish of the week as he closed with his best final round since a 64 sealed victory at Loch Lomond in 1999.
