AUBURN, Ala., March 18 (UPI) -- Auburn, which finished 14-14 this season after reaching the Sweet 16 of the NCAA tourney last year, fired Coach Cliff Ellis Thursday.
The Tigers had a 5-11 record in the Southeastern Conference.
"My evaluation of the program indicates that we need to move in a different direction," Auburn interim president Ed Richardson said. "It is simply time for a change."
Ellis compiled a 186-125 mark and a 73-87 mark in the SEC during his Auburn tenure. The Tigers advanced to the regional semifinals of the NCAA Tournament last season, including a win over St. Joseph's, before losing to eventual national champion Syracuse.
Ellis guided the Tigers to a 29-4 record and a No. 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament in 1999. But Auburn finished above .500 in SEC play just twice in his tenure.
Ellis coached 10 seasons at Clemson and nine at South Alabama before arriving in Auburn.
