AUBURN, Ala., March 16 (UPI) -- David Housel, athletic director at Auburn since 1994, said Tuesday he will step down from the job next January.
Housel said he will then stay with the university for an additional year performing other duties prior to retirement.
"By finalizing my plans now, there will be plenty of time for a search and plenty of time to ensure a smooth transition," Housel said. "I have been truly blessed to be a part of Auburn for these 39 years -- four as a student and 35 as an employee."
Auburn teams have won 29 SEC titles and five national championships in Housel's decade as athletic director.
"David Housel epitomizes that which is good about Auburn University," Auburn President Ed Richardson said. "Throughout his tenure at Auburn, he has provided the leadership that has allowed Auburn athletics to attain national recognition."
