Stupples wins Welch's Fry's Championship

TUCSON, March 14 (UPI) -- Karen Stupples, en route to her first LPGA Tour victory, fired a 7-under-par 63 Sunday and win by five strokes in the season-opening Welch's/Fry's Championship.

Winless in five LPGA seasons, the native of England took a one-stroke lead over compatriot Laura Davies entering the final round.

A bogey on the first hole was her only notable mistake. She followed with back-to-back birdies and added four more along the way. If there were any doubts, Stupples erased them with an eagle on the par-5 13th hole.

Stupples finished with a tournament-record total of 22-under 258, a stroke better than last year's winner, Wendy Doolan.

Koreans Jung Yeon Lee and Grace Park shared second place. Lee closed with a 66 and Park a 67.

Davies, who has won 20 tournaments in 18 years, had a final-round 71 and a three-way tie for fifth.
