GREENSBORO, N.C., March 14 (UPI) -- John Gilchrist turned in an outstanding performance Sunday as Maryland ended No. 4 Duke's five-year run of ACC tournament titles with a 95-87 overtime win.
Maryland (19-11) captured its first ACC crown since a Lefty Driesell-coached team won it in 1984 over Duke in Coach Mike Krzyzewski's first title game.
Since that loss, Krzyzewski has won eight titles and was seemingly on his way to a ninth as the Blue Devils held a 74-62 lead after a Chris Duhon score with 4:57 left in regulation.
That was the final basket in the second half for Duke (27-5) as Maryland closed on a 15-3 run, forging a 77-77 tie on Gilchrist's three-point play.
Duke's J.J. Redick missed an open 3-pointer at the end of regulation.
Maryland made 14-of-20 free throws in the extra session and fouled out Duke big men Nick Horvath and Shavlik Randolph.
Gilchrist finished with 26 points one day after a career-high 30-point performance in Maryland's 85-82 semifinal win over North Carolina State in which the Terrapins rallied from 21 points down.
