Cotton Bowl wants Cowboys

DALLAS, March 12 (UPI) -- Cotton Bowl officials said Friday they would support a new Dallas Cowboys stadium at the site of the historic college football series.

Some Dallas leaders have urged the Cowboys to build a new stadium at the historic Cotton Bowl in Fair Park near downtown. The Cowboys have been studying sites in Dallas and suburban Irving for a new covered facility.

Cotton Bowl Athletic Association, which manages the annual New Years' series, wants county officials to put the Cowboys stadium on the November ballot. They would move their 68-year-old football classic to the new stadium.

Cotton Bowl officials said a covered stadium would also give Dallas a chance to join the Bowl Championship Series, which determines the nation's top college football team. The Dallas area was rejected in 1994 because it did not have a domed stadium.

Cowboys owner Jerry Jones is planning a new $600 million stadium to replace aging Texas Stadium. He's also talking about surrounding it with a $1 billion business and entertainment park.
