Six tied for lead at Qatar Masters

DOHA, Qatar, March 11 (UPI) -- Six golfers shared the lead Thursday after the first round of the Qatar Masters on the European tour.

Tied at 4-under-par 68 were Paul Broadhurst and Matthew Blackey of England, Pierre Fulke of Sweden, Japan's Nobuhito Sato, Austrian Martin Wiegele and Andrew Oldcorn of Scotland.

Forty-six-year-old Ian Woosnam of Wales was a shot back, along with seven other golfers.

The field of 150 players battled strong winds at the Doha Golf Club and only those 14 players broke 70.

Ireland's Paul McGinley, runner-up to Mark O'Meara last week at the Dubai Desert Classic, shot a 72.

Chris Hughes, a 15-year-old English golfer, shot a 78. He qualified for the tournament by qinning the Qatar amateur championship.
