Maier winds super-G, pads World Cup lead

SESTRIERE, Italy, March 11 (UPI) -- Austria's Hermann Maier won the final World Cup super-G race of the season Thursday in Italy and increased his lead in the overall standings.

Maier finished with a time of 1.18:73. Countrymen Stephan Eberharter and Christoph Gruber were second and third.

Maier has 1,265 points, 42 ahead of Eberharter. Next in the standings are Benjamin Raich of Austria and Bode Miller of the United States.

The American missed a gate and failed to finish Thursday's race.

Two races remain in the World Cup schedule -- a giant slalom Saturday and a slalom Sunday.
