Calle Johansson returns, signs with Leafs

TORONTO, March 9 (UPI) -- Thirty-seven-year-old defenseman Calle Johansson returned to the NHL from retirement Tuesday, signing with Toronto for the rest of the season.

Maple Leafs General Manager John Fersuson said Johansson was signed as an unrestricted free agent. No financial terms were disclosed.

Johansson played 15 years with the Washington Capitals and was the team's all-time top scoring defenseman in assists (410) and total points (529).

He announced his retirement last year.

In his career, which included a season with Buffalo before he joined the Capitals, Johansson had 119 goals, 410 assists and 519 penalty minutes.

Johannson played for Sweden in the 1998 Olympics.
