Sharks Sturm lost for season

SAN JOSE, Calif., March 8 (UPI) -- The San Jose Sharks got the news Monday that left wing Marco Sturm would miss the remainder of the season with left ankle and leg injuries.

Second on the team in scoring with 41 points, Sturm crashed feet-first into the end boards in the first period of San Jose's loss at Colorado on Friday. After lying on the ice for several minutes, the German native was carried to the locker room on a stretcher.

"Marco Sturm suffered what is called a closed ankle dislocation, along with a fracatured fibula and a high ankle sprain," Sharks General Manager Doug Wilson said. "On a positive note, the ligaments from the ankle joint did not tear away and the overall injury could have been far more severe.

Selected 21st overall in 1996, Sturm collected 21 goals and 20 assists in 64 games. He ranks sixth on San Jose's all-time scoring list with 256 points.
