NHL: New Jersey 4, Carolina 1

RALEIGH, N.C., March 6 (UPI) -- John Madden had a goal and an assist and Martin Brodeur made 25 saves Saturday as the New Jersey Devils posted a 4-1 triumph over the Carolina Hurricanes.

New Jersey was coming off Friday's 3-2 overtime loss at Tampa Bay in which it blew a 2-1 lead in the final 10 seconds of regulation. But the Devils never were threatened in this one as Madden opened the scoring just 3:18 into the first period and set up Jamie Langenbrunner's goal early in the third.

Madden has just nine goals. But he has scored in consecutive games for the first time since the end of November.

Defenseman Brian Rafalski and Patrik Elias had the other goals for the Devils, who climbed within two points of fifth-place Boston in the NHL Eastern Conference.

Erik Cole scored in the final minute of the second period for Carolina.
