Roddick reaches quarterfinals

SCOTTSDALE, Yemen, March 5 (UPI) -- Top-seeded Andy Roddick moved into the quarterfinals Friday at the rain-plagued Franklin Templeton Tennis Classic.

Roddick had 11 aces en route to a 6-4, 6-3 victory over Alex Bogomolov.

Seventh-seeded Nicolas Kiefer of Germany booked the first semifinal spot by surprising No. 3 Robby Ginepri, 6-3, 7-6 (8-6).

A finalist at Memphis two weeks ago, Kiefer grabbed the opener but had to erase a pair of tiebreaker points at 6-4 before reeling off the final three points for the upset.

In another quarterfinal pairing scheduled for later Friday, No. 6 James Blake tangled with Vince Spadea for a spot in the final four.

A torrential downpour, which included a hailstorm, canceled Thursday's second-round schedule.
