Redskins sign linebacker Marcus Washington

ASHBURN, Va., March 5 (UPI) -- Linebacker Marcus Washington, who started the past three years for the Indianapolis Colts, is the newest member of the Washington Redskins.

The team announced the signing Friday. No terms were given but reports said the player agreed to a six-year $24 million contract that includes a signing bonus of $7 million.

The Redskins have been rapidly rebuilding since bringing back Joe Gibbs as coach.

Gibbs led the team to Super Bowl titles in 1982, 1987 and 1991 and Washington, introduced at a news conference, said, "Looking at the three Super Bowl Trophies up here, hopefully we can get a few more of those."

Washington had 251 tackles, 18 sacks and two interceptions with the Colts.

"One of the things I admire about Marcus is that we like people who play every week," Gibbs said. "He's played 63 of the last 64 games in pro ball. We think with a 26-year-old linebacker we have a lot years here with him."

Quarterback Mark Brunell, running back Clinton Portis, cornerback Shawn Springs and defensive tackle Cornelius Griffin also signed with the team this week.
