Colo. scandal prompts call for hearings

DENVER, March 1 (UPI) -- A Democrat in Washington is calling for congressional hearings into the sexual assault allegations involving the University of Colorado football program.

Michigan Rep. John Conyers, the top Democrat on the House Judiciary Committee, wrote to the committee chairman, citing the recent allegations of sex and alcohol abuse during Colorado recruiting visits, the Rocky Mountain News reports.

"With every passing day, new allegations and reports bring to light the extent to which the University of Colorado's athletic recruitment program, as well as other colleges' programs are spiraling dangerously out of control," he wrote.

University of Colorado President Betsy Hoffman said she met with the Colorado congressional delegation last week and they supported the current investigations.

Gov. Bill Owens has also named Attorney General Ken Salazar a special prosecutor to investigate any possible criminal violations.

Democrat Rep. Mark Udall, whose district includes the university, denounced Conyer's statement through a spokesman. He said it was premature for Congress to intervene and it could impede the investigations already under way.
