CALGARY, Alberta, Feb. 29 (UPI) -- Robyn Regehr, Jordan Leopold and Jarome Iginla scored first-period goals Sunday as the Calgary Flames posted a 4-2 victory over the Phoenix Coyotes.
Trying to make the playoffs for the first time since 1996, the Flames had lost four of five games and were just two points ahead of St. Louis for the NHL Western Conference's final postseason berth.
Reghehr, Leopold and Iginla helped end the struggles as the trio provided a 3-0 lead in under 16 minutes.
The Coyotes battled within 3-2 after two periods before Leopold set up Chuck Kobasew's goal with 4:52 remaining to seal it for the Flames.
Jeff Taffe and Shane Doan scored power-play goals for Phoenix, which fell to 0-3 under Coach Rick Bowness.
