Red Wings trade for Lang

DETROIT, Feb. 27 (UPI) -- The Detroit Red Wings picked up All-Star center Robert Lang from Washington on Friday for a prospect and two draft picks.

The Red Wings are the latest team to take advantage of Washington's desire to dump salaries. Lang is tied for the league scoring lead with Tampa Bay's Martin St. Louis at 74 points.

The Capitals, who have traded away stars Jaromir Jagr and Peter Bondra in the last two months, received left wing Tomas Fleischmann and Detroit's 2004 first-round pick and a fourth-round choice in 2006.

Lang has 29 goals and 45 assists in 63 games this season. The 33-year-old Czech appeared in 145 games for the Capitals over the past two seasons since signing as a free agent on July 1, 2002.

At the time, the contract was the richest free-agent deal ever in the league at five years, $25 million.
