NEW YORK, Feb. 26 (UPI) -- New York Jets Quarterback Vinny Testaverde may have played his last game in the National Footall League.
"I am considering, unless something changes, bringing an end to my professional playing career," Testaverde said Thursday. "In discussions with the Jets' organization, they have been very positive and supportive of me."
Coach Herman Edwards said the 40-year-old quarterback will not take part in off-season workouts.
Testaverde has been with the Jets six years and started seven games in 2003 in place of Chad Pennington, who was injured.
The Jets also have quarterback Brooks Bollinger, who apparently will be the backup to Pennington next season.
"Vinny Testaverde will forgo participating in the upcoming off-season workouts, and at this point in his career, we recognize his desire to re-evaluate his future," Edwards said. "His overall contributions to the game are a testament to his dedication, hard work and perseverance, and we support any decision he decides to make."
Testaverde led the Jets to the AFC championship game in 1998. He ruptured an Achilles tendon in the first game of the 1999 season and lost his starting job to Pennington.
