Chambers may challenge lifetime ban

LONDON, Feb. 25 (UPI) -- Dwain Chambers is expected to become the first athlete to challenge the British Olympic Association's lifetime ban policy.

On Tuesday, Chambers was banned by the British federation for testing positive for the designer steroid tetrahydrogestrinone, commonly known as THG. The ban prevents Chambers from competing in the 2004 Summer Olympics.

The International Association of Athletics Federation's doping rules state that Chambers must be banned for two years, a punishment that began Nov. 7, 2003.

The British federation's lifetime ban is for athletes found guilty of a drug offense without sufficient "mitigating circumstances," irrespective of sanctions imposed by sports' other governing bodies.

The European 100-meter champion, Chambers has 60 days to appeal the decision before the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS).

Chambers is considering his appeals options, but appears to be confident of overturning the British federation's hard-line policy.
