
COSTA DO SAUIPE, Brazil, Feb. 23 (UPI) -- The opening day at the $380,000 Brasil Open featured two upsets as Mariano Zabaleta and Felix Mantilla both fell to unseeded opponents.
Zabaleta, the fifth seed from Argentina, dropped a 6-4, 6-1 decision to Spaniard Albert Montanes after Mantilla suffered a 6-2, 6-2 setback against Filippo Volandri of Italy.
Zabaleta was coming off a quarterfinal appearance in Buenoa Aires, Argentina.
The other seeded player in action advanced as No. 7 Gaston Gaudio of Argentina rolled past Brazilian wild card Ricardo Mello, 6-2, 6-4.
Ruben Ramirez Hidalgo of Spain outlasted Harel Levy of Israel, 6-4, 7-6 (7-3), in the only other match of the day.
The claycourt tournament is full of dirt specialists, including top seed Carlos Moya of Spain, who lost the Buenos Aires final to Guillermo Coria. Moya meets Brazilian-born Tomas Behrend of Germany in the first round Tuesday.
