Wallace makes brief Detroit debut

AUBURN HILLS, Mich. (UPI) -- All-Star Rasheed Wallace made his debut Friday night with the Detroit Pistons but was pulled out at halftime because of a paperwork problem.

Wallace was acquired by Detroit this week in a three-team deal. But Coach Larry Brown took him out of a game against Minnesota at the half because the team was notified by the NBA that all the papers had not been received on the complicated trade. New Piston Mike James was in the same situation and he was also pulled at the half.

Wallace had played 12 minutes and scored four points. James played five and was scoreless.

Minnesota won the game 88-87.

The Pistons said both players should be eligible for Sunday's game with the Orlando Magic.


Interim coach named at Colorado

BOULDER, Colo. (UPI) -- Colorado assistant Brian Cabral was named interim football coach, replacing the suspended Gary Barnett.

Cabral has been an assistant for 15 years. He steps in during an investigation into whether sex and alcohol were used to recruit prospective players. Six women have said they were raped by Colorado football players since 2000. Police were also investigating charges the university's athletic department hired an escort service for sex parties at a hotel.

Barnett was placed on a paid administrative leave this week following comments he made about Katie Hnida, one of the women who said she was raped.

Cabral, 47, said he plans to serve at least through April 30, when an independent panel is to complete its investigation into the football program's recruiting practices.


Penguins tie NHL record for losses

PITTSBURGH, Feb. 20 (UPI) -- The Pittsburgh Penguins tied an NHL record Friday night with their 17th straight loss, dropping a 2-0 decision to Florida.

Pittsburgh has now matched the consecutive loss record shared by the Washington Capitals in 1974-74 and the San Jose Sharks in 1992-93.

Panthers' goalie Roberto Luongo extended his personal winning streak against Pittsburgh to eight games.

Pittsburgh has also has lost an NHL-record 13 straight home games.

Kristian Huselius and Juraj Kolnik scored Florida's goals.

The Penguins, ironically, also hold the the NHL record with a 17-game winning streak, in 1992-93.

Weir, Maruyama share lead at Nissan

PACIFIC PALISADES, Calif., Feb. 20 (UPI) -- Defending champion Mike Weir Shot a 7-under-par 64 to share the second-round lead with Shigeki Maruyama in the Nissan Open in California.

Briny Baird and Scott McCarron were tied for third and John Daly is a stroke back of them.

Weir's total of 12-under 130 tied the Riviera Country Club record set by Davis Love III. Maruyama, who led in the first round, finished with a 66. Baird shot a 9-under 62, McCarron had 65 and Daly 64.

Tiger Woods fought his way back into contention with a 66 to make his 117th consecutive cut.

"This course definitely sets up as one of the better ones for me," Weir said. Any golf course that you have to work the ball both ways, like Augusta, works for me. I'm not going to rip it out there 320 (yards). I have to find different ways to get it close to the hole, and that's working the ball both ways."
