Yankees may get Alex Rodriguez

NEW YORK, Feb. 15 (UPI) -- A deal to send Alex Rodriguez to the Yankees for Alfonso Soriano and a player to be determined is reportedly all but complete with the Texas Rangers.

The New York Times said the trade, joining the most celebrated franchise in baseball with perhaps the best player in the game, would have to be approved by the commissioner's office and the players union.

The newspaper said Rodriguez has seven years and $179 million remaining on the 10-year, $252 million contract he signed with the Rangers in December 2000. The Rangers would include money in the mid-$60 million range that would reduce the Yankees' average annual payments to Rodriguez from $25.5 million to about $16 million.

Rodriguez has led the American League in home runs the last three seasons, winning the Most Valuable Player award last year. But the Times said the Rangers have finished in last place each season and are desperate to shed his contract.

The Boston Red Sox reached their own deal for Rodriguez in December, but the players union rejected that agreement because it didn't like the restructuring of Rodriguez's contract.
