NAPLES, Fla., Feb. 13 (UPI) -- Gary Koch had a pair of eagles in a dazzling round of 10-under-par 62 Friday to take a one-stroke lead after opening day at the Ace Group Classic.
Koch, in search of his first victory on the Champions Tour, birdied the 11th and 12th holes before his first eagle on the par-5 13th hole. He also eagled the par-5 17th to finish the back nine at 8-under 28.
A winner of six PGA Tour events, Koch's best finish on the Champions Tour has been a tie for 13th at last year's Kroger Classic.
Lonnie Nielsen moved within one shot of Koch by making five birdies an eagle on the back nine.
Hale Irwin, a winner of 38 Champions Tour events, shot a 65 and was tied for third along with Larry Nelson.
Jack Nicklaus, who claimed the last of his 10 Champions Tour victories in 1996, shot a 68.
