The fight started when Atlanta left wing Jeff Cowan attempted to high stick Jason Chimera in the neutral zone. Edmonton's enforcer, Laraque stepped in, resulting in a series of fights all over the ice.

Cowan eventually leveraged Mike Bishai into Atlanta's bench. As the duo exchanged fists over the boards, goalies Pasi Nurminen and Ty Conklin squared off and swapped punches. In all, 10 players were ejected for their roles in the brawl.
