VINA DEL MAR, Chile, Feb. 10 (UPI) -- Top seed Nicolas Massu made quick work of Spain's Fernando Verdasco in the opening round of the Bellsouth Open on Tuesday.
Massu defeated Verdasco, 6-1, 6-2, and advanced to face Harel Levy of Israel. Levy shook off an injury to get past Frantisek Cermak of the Czech Republic, 6-3, 6-3.
Fifth seed Fernando Gonzalez of Chile also advanced, ousting Albert Montanes of Spain, 6-1, 7-5. Gonzalez, the 2002 champion here, will meet countryman Adrian Garcia in the second round.
Garcia, who won the wild card tournament two weeks ago and won twice in Davis Cup competition last weekend, beat countryman Paul Capdeville, 6-4, 6-4, to advance.
No. 7 Filippo Volandri of Italy and No. 8 Flavio Saretta of Brazil both moved on.
Sixth seed Juan Ignacio Chela of Argentina was the only seeded player to lose, falling to defending champion David Sanchez of Spain, 6-4, 6-2.
