COL BKB: Providence 74, Syracuse 61

PROVIDENCE, R.I., Feb. 7 (UPI) -- Marcus Douthit and Donnie McGrath each scored 16 points Saturday to help No. 23 Providence down 20th-ranked Syracuse, 74-61.

Providence was coming off losses to Seton Hall and Virginia Tech and faced an early 6-0 deficit. But the Friars used a 23-6 run and did not trail thereafter en route to their first home win over a ranked opponent since beating Georgetown on Feb. 10, 2001.

Ryan Gomes scored seven of his 12 points in the decisive run for Providence (14-5, 6-3), which had lost its last six home games against Syracuse.

While Gomes was held under 16 points for just the fifth time this season, Syracuse's leading scorer, Hakim Warrick, scored all 10 of his points in the final 20 minutes.

Warrick entered the game averaging 19.8 points, just behind Gomes (19.9). Virginia Tech's Bryant Matthews leads the league with a 23.6 scoring average.
