Sydor joints Lightning; Svitkov to Jackets

TAMPA, Fla., Jan. 28 (UPI) -- Former all-star defenseman Darryl Sydor is now with the Tampa Bay Lightning.

Sydor was acquired in a trade with the Columbus Blue Jackets for center Alexander Svitov. The deal was announced Tuesday.

The teams also swapped 2004 draft picks. Tampa Bay gave up third-round pick and got fourth-rounder in return.

"Darryl Sydor "will bring veteran leadership and significant playoff experience to our hockey club," said Tampa Bay General Manager Jay Feaster.

The 31-year-old Sydor was in his first season with Columbus after more than seven years with the Dallas Stars.

Svitov made his NHL debut last season and played sparingly with the Lightning.

"Adding a big, physical forward like Alexander Svitov, who is just 21 years of age, fills a critical need for our franchise because it is an area where we don't have a lot of depth," Blue Jackets General Mnager Doug MacLean said.
