KAUPULEHU-KONA, Hawaii, Jan. 24 (UPI) -- James Mason owned a one-shot lead in the MasterCard Championship Friday when the first round of the tournament was halted by darkness.

Heavy rains forced a suspension of play during the opening day of the Champions Tour season.

Twelve players were unable to complete the first round and will complete it early Saturday.

Mason shot a 7-under 65 at the Hualalai Golf Club, one shot better than Stewart Ginn, Dave Eichelberger, Jay Sigel and Jim Thorpe. Doug Tewell was at 6-under with five holes to play.

Among those still on the course were Jack Nicklaus, who was 3-under through 13, and Arnold Palmer, who was at 1-over with three holes left.
