COL BKB: NC State 76, Georgia Tech 72

RALEIGH, N.C., Jan. 24 (UPI) -- Marcus Melvin and Scooter Sherrill each scored 18 points Saturday as North Carolina State took second in the ACC by beating No. 13 Georgia Tech, 76-72.

Julius Hodge, the leading scorer in the ACC, missed all six shots and fouled out with two points. North Carolina State (11-4, 4-1 ACC) opted to shoot three-pointers and took a 51-36 lead on Sherrill's shot from the arc with 16:17 left.

Georgia Tech (15-3, 3-2) fought back with a series of runs, led by reserve spark plug Will Bynum. Clarence Moore made 1-of-2 from the line to cut the deficit to 67-64 with 1:54 left.

The Wolfpack ran the clock down before finding Sherrill open on the right wing. He sank a three-pointer for a 70-64 cushion with 78 seconds remaining.

Bynum's layup pulled the Yellow Jackets within 74-72 with nine seconds left.
