LOS ANGELES, Jan. 23 (UPI) -- Detroit Red Wings rookie defenseman Niklas Kronwal broke his right leg during warmups before Thursday night's game against the Los Angeles Kings.
Kronwal went down while skating and was in obvious pain as he was helped off the ice by two teammates. He will return to Detroit on Friday for further examination.

A 23-year-old Swede, Kronwal was recaled from the minors on Dec. 9 due to injuries to veterans Chris Chelios and Derian Hatcher but played well enough to earn a regular spot in the lineup. He has a goal and four assists in 20 games.
