EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J., Jan. 23 (UPI) -- Martin Brodeur made 21 saves en route to his NHL-leading 10th shutout Friday night as New Jersey snapped Montreal's five-game unbeaten streak, 2-0.
Patrik Elias had a goal and an assist.
Winless in his previous three games (0-2-1), Brodeur did most of his work in the third period, turning aside 12 shots. The reigning Vezina Trophy winner, who also made five saves in the first and four in the second, passed Lorne Chabot for eighth place on the all-time shutout list with 74.
The goaltender's last victory had been a 1-0 blanking of Toronto on Jan. 10.
Brodeur, who trails Tony Esposito by two for seventh place, is five shutouts away from matching the former Chicago goaltender's modern-day record for most in a season. Esposito recorded 15 shutouts for the Blackhawks in 1969-70.
