CLEVELAND, Jan. 23 (UPI) -- The Cleveland Browns on Friday signed Coach Butch Davis to a two-year extension that carries his contract through the 2007 season.

Financial terms were not disclosed.

Davis, 52, is just 21-27 in three seasons, but he led the Browns to their first playoff appearance since 1994 two years ago and has legitimate excuses for his club's 5-11 finish in 2003.

This past season, the Browns played four of the six NFL teams that had at least 12 wins. They lost all four games, three by six points or less.

"We are dedicated to providing Cleveland with a championship-caliber football team and I believe the foundation for this begins with continuity at the top," said team owner Randy Lerner. "I have total faith in Butch Davis as a person and as a head coach to lead us in the right direction."

Cleveland ended the year with 15 players on injured reserve, reserve-non football injury or the physically unable to perform list.
