TORONTO, Jan. 21 (UPI) -- Darcy Tucker of Toronto underwent retinal surgery on Wednesday morning.
Tucker, best known for a low-bridge check of Michael Peca in a 2002 playoff series, was the victim of a high stick to his left eye in Tuesday night's 2-0 win over the New York Islanders. He will be sidelined indefinitely.
Following a faceoff in the Islanders' zone late in the second period, New York's Jason Blake clipped Tucker with his stick.
"It's an unfortunate part of the game, but it was an accident," Blake said. "I'm not the kind of guy to go out and stick guys in the face."
Many wondered if Blake's high stick was intentional since the Islanders had been seeking to get even with Tucker since his check on Peca, their captain, resulted in a torn ACL.
Tucker is third on the Leafs in goals with 14 and has 21 points and 60 penalty minutes with a plus-8 rating.
