CONCORD, N.C., Jan. 20 (UPI) -- NASCAR Tuesday officially announced a revised points system that will crown a season champion in a 10-race chase to the championship.
But the new plan has left many of the participants in the stock car racing series believing it's too drastic of a change and that the driver who wins the title won't be a season champion.
After the first 26 races of the 36-race season, all drivers in the Top 10 and any others within 400 points of the leader will earn a berth in the "Chase for the Championship." Under the old system, no driver outside the top 10 with 10 races remaining has come back to win the championship of NASCAR's premier series.
"What we're not going to call this is a playoff," NASCAR Chairman Brian France said. "It's not a playoff. It's not a single elimination. It not a win or lose and you are out. Not a best three-out-of-five. We think we have got something that's better than the playoffs."
