COLUMBUS, Ohio, Jan. 20 (UPI) -- Top striker Brian McBride of Major League Soccer's Columbus Crew was sold Tuesday to Fulham of England.
The deal came as a surprise. It had been widely reported that McBride, one of the top stars in the MLS and a member of the U.S. World Cup team, would go instead to England's Blackburn club.

McBride will earn an estimated $1.5 million a year. He would have earned about $341,000 if he stayed in the MLS.
"It's been a bit of a roller-coaster ride," McBride said. "The Crew has always
supported me, but we decided this was the right thing for me to
do."
