AUBURN, Ala., Jan. 17 (UPI) -- A controversial decision to hold a clandestine search for a new football coach has led to the resignation of Dr. William Walker, president of Auburn University.
Walker, 66, who was installed on June 3, 2002, stepped down on Friday. He, Athletic Director David Housel, and two school trustees had a secret meeting with Louisville Coach Bobby Petrino on Nov. 20.
Auburn Coach Tommy Tuberville was not advised of the meeting, and had not been told his job might be under discussion or in doubt.
Walker since has been the object of intense scrutiny and criticism.
Tuberville, who has been given a contract extension through 2008, tried to make peace.
"Dr. Walker did a lot of positive things for (Auburn) athletics," he said. "Now, we just need to move on."
The Birmingham News reported that Walker will be succeeded by state schools superintendent Ed Richardson. He already is a trustee by virtue of his current position.
