The 66-year-old LeBeau ran the Steelers' defense when Pittsburgh made the Super Bowl in 1995. He replaces Tim Lewis, who was fired after the season.

After spending the 2003 season as an assistant head coach with the Buffalo Bills, LeBeau will be reunited with Coach Bill Cowher.

"One of the attractions to me being in Pittsburgh was the fact that philosophically, Bill and I have always been on the same page, and that is to attack," he said. "We will be a pressure defense and I know the head coach feels that way, too."

The Steelers allowed 30 or more points in four games this season, and finished with a 6-10 record. In 2001, they had the NFL's top-ranked defense and were first in rushing defense in 2001 and 2002.

Prior to joining the Bills, LeBeau spent 2 1/2 seasons as coach of the Cincinnati Bengals.
