Three elected to Tennis Hall of Fame

NEWPORT, R.I., Jan. 15 (UPI) -- Steffi Graf and Stefan Edberg, who combined for 149 singles titles and 28 Grand Slam triumphs, were elected Thursday to the International Tennis Hall of Fame.

Also part of the Class of 2004 is Dorothy "Dodo" Cheney, the first American to win the Australian National Championship in 1938.

Graf and Edberg were elected in the Recent Player category, while Cheney was elected in the Master Player category. Each inductee needed a 75 percent favorable vote for induction.

Graf won 107 WTA singles titles and 11 doubles titles. She captured 22 Grand Slam singles titles, and in 1995, became the only player, male or female, to win each of the four major singles titles at least four times.

Edberg won 41 singles titles and 18 doubles titles. He captured six grand slam titles, winning the Australian Open, Wimbledon, and the U.S. Open twice each.

Edberg, 37, spent 72 weeks as the world's top-ranked player and played on 13 Davis Cup teams for his native Sweden.
