Gilchrist helped Maryland take better care of the ball after halftime and the Terrapins went inside to Jamar Smith, who finished with 22 points. Smith had seven points in a 12-0 run that gave Maryland a 60-54 lead early in the second half.

Smith made one of two at the line to put Maryland ahead for good, 79-78, with 2:34 to go. He added one 11 seconds later and Travis Garrison and Chris McCray each had a pair from the line around a foul shot by North Carolina's Sean May to make it 84-79 with 63 seconds left.
