TORONTO, Jan. 10 (UPI) -- Martin Brodeur continued his outstanding season, stopping 25 shots to post his ninth shutout and lead New Jersey to a 1-0 victory over Toronto.
Only halfway through the season, Brodeur already has matched his shutout total from a year ago and moved within six of the modern-day (post 1949) NHL single-season record set by Tony Esposito in 1969-70.
Brodeur leads all active goaltenders with 73 shutouts and is tied for eighth all-time with Maple Leaf old-timer Lorne Chabot.
The reigning Vezina Trophy winner as the best goalie in the NHL, Brodeur also earned his 385th career victory, catching Mike Vernon for ninth place in league history. Toronto's Ed Belfour is fifth with 419.
Brian Gionta scored the only goal for the Devils, who were coming off just their second two-game losing streak of the season.
