Islanders ink Cliff Ronning

NEW YORK, Jan. 9 (UPI) -- The New York Islanders, seeking to bolster an offense plagued by injuries, have signed free agent Cliff Ronning.

With center Alexei Yashin and right wing Mark Parrish sidelined, the Islanders hope Ronning can resume his career as a successful playmaking center. He has 297 goals and 548 assists for 845 points in 1,097 games over 17 NHL seasons.

"Cliff is a proven point-producer," said Islanders general manager Mike Milbury. "With two of our top scorers out, we were fortunate Cliff was available as a free agent and showed such a strong desire to be an Islander. His experience and work on the power play will be great assets for us."

Ronning, 38, is expected to begin skating on Saturday. His first game with New York has yet to be determined.

He had 17 goals and 31 assists in 80 games last season with the Minnesota Wild, and added two goals and seven assists in 17 playoff games.

Yashin has a wrist injury and Parrish a high ankle sprain.
